How to choose the right dress for the occasion

A good dress does two jobs: it suits the occasion and it makes you comfortable all day. A few simple checks make choosing easier.

Start with the occasion. Long flowing dresses and soft fabrics suit weddings and evening events, while lighter cuts and prints are comfortable for daytime outings, work and family visits. Think about fabric and season. Chiffon, cotton and linen blends keep you cool in summer, while heavier crepe and satin look elegant in cooler weather. Check that the fabric is not see-through in daylight and that it feels soft against the skin.

Get the fit right. Check the shoulders, the bust and the waist first because they are the hardest to alter, and leave room to sit and move. Length matters too, so try the dress with the shoes you plan to wear.
