Abayas: modern styles and how to wear them

The abaya is an everyday classic that now comes in many cuts, fabrics and details.
The abaya is an everyday classic that now comes in many cuts, fabrics and details. Choosing well makes it both modest and stylish.
Pick the cut for your day. A straight or open abaya is easy for work and daily errands, a belted one defines the waist, and a flowing one with wide sleeves feels more formal for visits and occasions.
Look at the fabric. Light crepe and chiffon blends move well and stay comfortable in warm weather, and the fabric should hang straight without clinging. Check the opacity and the quality of the stitching at the seams and sleeves.
Play with details and layers. Small embroidery, buttons or a contrast trim add character without making the abaya heavy. Plain neutral colours underneath let the abaya stand out, and a matching scarf finishes the look.
Length and sleeves decide comfort. The hem should clear the floor when you walk, and the sleeves should let you move and drive comfortably. Follow the care label: most abayas look best when hung after washing and steamed lightly instead of ironed at high heat.
